Rash Guard vs Compression Shirt: What Is the Difference?
A rash guard is built for grappling. It uses a thicker polyester and spandex fabric, flat seams and a grippy hem that stays tucked in. A compression shirt is lighter and made for running and gym work, not for being pulled and dragged on the mat.
They look alike, but a compression shirt usually wears out fast in jiu jitsu and MMA, and many have mesh panels that snag.
Rash guard vs compression shirt
| Rash guard | Compression shirt | |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Thicker polyester and spandex | Lighter, more open knit |
| Seams | Flatlock, reinforced | Usually lighter seams |
| Hem | Often an anti slip waistband | Plain hem that rides up |
| Graphics | Usually sublimated into the fabric | Often plain |
| Best for | No-gi BJJ, MMA, wrestling, under the gi | Running, gym training, hot weather |
Why grapplers use rash guards
On the mat, your top gets gripped, pulled and dragged. A rash guard’s dense fabric and flatlock seams take that friction, and the snug fit leaves nothing loose to grab.
It also protects your skin from mat burn and keeps a layer between you and the mat, which helps with hygiene.
When a compression shirt is fine
For running, lifting or a hot gym session, a compression shirt does the job and breathes better. Some people also wear one under the gi if they only train gi.
Competition and ranked rash guards
No-gi events set their own dress rules, so check before you compete. Some require a rash guard in your belt colour. Our IBJJF rash guard guide covers fabric, fit and ranked colours.
What is a rash guard?
A rash guard is a tight, stretchy top made from polyester and spandex. It started in surfing to protect skin from rash, and grapplers adopted it for the same reason on the mat.
Can you wear a rash guard under a gi?
Yes, and many people do. It soaks up sweat, protects your skin and keeps the gi from rubbing.
Long sleeve or short sleeve?
Long sleeves protect more skin from mat burn and make you harder to grip. Short sleeves are cooler in hot gyms.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wear a compression shirt for BJJ?
You can, but it will wear out faster and may have mesh panels that snag. A rash guard is built for grappling.
Is a rash guard the same as a compression top?
No. Both are tight, but a rash guard uses tougher fabric, flat seams and a hem that stays in place.
Should a rash guard be tight?
Yes. It should fit like a second skin so there is no loose fabric to grab, but it should not restrict breathing.
Do rash guards protect from the sun?
Rash guards started in surfing and many block a lot of sun, but check the product’s UPF rating if sun protection matters.
Is a rash guard the same as a swim shirt?
They are close relatives. Swim rash guards focus on sun protection, while grappling rash guards focus on durability and fit.
