BJJ Gi Weaves Explained: Single, Pearl, Gold and Double Weave

The weave decides how heavy, tough and hot a BJJ gi is. Single weave is light and cheap, pearl weave is the best all rounder, gold weave is denser, and double weave is the heaviest and toughest. Fabric weight is measured in GSM, grams per square metre.

These ranges come from gi buyer guides. Each brand’s fabric is a little different, so ask for the exact GSM.

Which weave should you choose?

If you are buying your first gi, pearl weave is the safe choice. It is light enough for hot rooms and tough enough for daily training.

If you compete at a weight limit, a lighter weave helps you make weight in the gi. If you train hard every day and grips tear your gi apart, step up to gold or double weave.

What about the pants?

Gi pants are usually cotton canvas or ripstop. Look for reinforced knees, seat and waistband, because those are where pants fail.

Colour rules for competition

For IBJJF events, the gi must be white, blue or black, in one solid colour for jacket and pants. Local events may allow other colours, so check first.

Pearl weave vs gold weave

Pearl weave is lighter and cooler, with a small bumpy texture. Gold weave is denser, tougher and warmer, and it takes longer to dry. Pearl suits most people; gold suits heavy, frequent training.

What is the lightest gi weave?

Ripstop and single weave are the lightest. Ripstop is often used for pants and for competition gis made to help with weight limits.

Does the weave affect shrinkage?

Heat matters more than weave. Any cotton gi can shrink in a hot wash or dryer, so wash cold and hang dry whatever the weave.
