Karate and Taekwondo Sparring Gear: What a Club Needs

A karate or taekwondo club needs mitts, shin and instep guards and a mouthguard for every sparring student, plus kick rackets for drills. Forearm and ankle guards add protection for kids and beginners. For federation events, gear must come from the federation’s approved list.

Karate mitts

Karate mitts have a molded foam pad over the knuckles, a finger loop and an elastic wrist strap. They leave the fingers free for blocks and grabs. See QST’s karate mitts.

Shin and instep guards

These cover the shin and the top of the foot, where kicks land and checks hurt. Slip-on styles in elastic knit suit point sparring, and strapped styles with thicker pads suit heavier contact. See QST’s shin protectors.

Forearm and ankle guards

Elastic arm protectors cushion the forearm or elbow in blocks. Elastic ankle protectors give light compression and fit under shin guards.

Kick rackets

Kick rackets are hand targets for speed and accuracy drills. Double rackets have two leaves that clap when a kick lands well. See QST’s taekwondo kick rackets.

Competition approval

WKF kumite uses red and blue mitts and shin guards, and only WKF-approved gear can be used in WKF events. World Taekwondo and national federations keep their own approved lists. For club training, gradings and local events, approval is usually not required.

Kits for new students

Many clubs issue a martial arts kit to new students, with mitts, guards and a bag in club colours. It saves sizing each piece separately.

Who makes this gear

QST International makes martial arts uniforms, belts and protective gear to order in Sialkot, Pakistan. The facility is WRAP certified and certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, and it shares its ethical audit data with buyers through Sedex. The minimum order is 30 to 50 sets, pairs or pieces per design, a sample takes 7 to 10 days, and bulk production takes 4 to 6 weeks after approval. Ask for a quote.
